Extensions and Structural Work

Having traded as professional building contractors since 2005, we rely on our reputation, but this reputation isn’t just for offering value and exemplary workmanship. Our clients come back to us again and again because we offer them something more – total peace of mind. When it comes to large jobs, such as house extensions, we know this is more important than ever.

That’s why our team works hard to put your mind at ease and answers all your questions (as well as the ones you may not even think to ask) before we pick up our tools.

Will I require planning permission?

A great benefit to extensions is that they often fall into the permitted development category, which means planning permission may not be required. However, this is subject to a series of conditions, such as a single-storey side extension not being higher than 4 metres or the eaves of the extension not exceeding the height of the eaves of the property.

ABC Builders offers guidance and assistance with planning permission, a benefit that is backed by us having good relationships with local authorities in Chelsea, Fulham, Kingston, Richmond and Wimbledon, and in many other areas across the Capital.

Which building regulations are going to apply?

Regardless of whether a project requires planning permission or not, most house extensions in Southwest London and the UK need approval under the UK Building Regulations. This is especially true when planning to replace or install windows, doors, electrical, plumbing and heating systems, and roofing, lead or roofline components. We will help you to establish the exact approvals needed from the local authority for your area.

We are conversant with all parts of the Building Regulations including Part B for fire safety, Part L for conservation of fuel and power, and Part P for electrical safety.

How long does the planning process take?

This will depend on the type of extension being planned. For example, planning single-storey side-return house extensions won’t need as much time as outlining a two-storey wraparound build. Whatever your vision, our team strives to make the planning process as fast and as efficient as possible for all our customers whilst ensuring their requirements are met.

Do I need approval to build a porch or conservatory?

Porches are classed as permitted development so do not require planning permission – so long as the porch area doesn’t exceed three square metres. Conservatories are also seen as permitted development but will sometimes require regulatory approval in line with the current UK Building Regulations. Our experts at ABC Builders can provide more detailed advice on this during your consultation.

We can visit homes in Chelsea, Fulham, Kingston, Richmond and Wimbledon, as well as in the surrounding areas, to survey, consult and provide a free, no-obligation quotation.
